Terrorist threats against Syria will extend to Iraq, Jordan, and Türkiye, Iranian FM Araqchi warned.

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reaffirmed his country’s support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is currently facing a military offensive led by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

“Our support for the Syrian government and people in their fight against extremist terrorist groups. Without a doubt, they stem from a U.S.-Zionist conspiracy,” Araqchi stated during a joint press conference with Foreign Ministers Fuad Hussein (Iraq) and Bassam Sabbagh (Syria).

The Iranian diplomat highlighted that the United Nations has designated the Levant Liberation Committee (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, HTS), which split from the Nusra Front (formerly Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate) in 2016, as a terrorist organization.

“Terrorist threats against Syria will not remain confined to Syria; they will extend to all neighboring countries,” Araqchi said, referring to Iraq, Jordan, and Türkiye.

He also warned of the dire consequences of Syria falling into the hands of such terrorist groups, stating, “This would pave the way for the return of the Islamic State.”

Previously, in 2014, the Islamic State seized a vast territory, exploiting the Syrian conflict. Although it was territorially defeated in 2019, IS continues to maintain a presence in the expansive Syrian desert.

“Countries that remain silent and fail to act against these organizations are complicit. We must ask why they fight terrorism in regions where they have interests but not in Syria,” Araqchi asserted.

“Iran has always supported Syria, and Iran will continue to support Syria with everything it needs and requests,” he emphasized, and confirmed that Russia, Iran, and Türkiye will discuss the situation in Syria during a high-level meeting scheduled to take place in Qatar on Saturday.
